Common types: The common methods of the Purgation are introduced:cold purgation, warm purgation, warm-purgation of cold accumulation, laxation, lubricant laxation, drastic purgation, timely purgation to preserve yin, timely purgation to preserve fluid, increasing fluid to induce laxation, moistening the intestines to loose the bowels, unblocking the bowels and purging heat, unblocking and purging, hydragogue therapy, driving out water by catharsis, driving out retained water, expelling retained fluid by catharsis, mild purgation, taking away firewood from under the cauldron, eliminating the stale and the stagnant, eliminating stagnant blood by catharsis, elimination before tonification, tonification before elimination, elimination and tonification in combination, erroneous administration of purgatives.

✵Cold purgation: method of inducing purgation with medicines cold in nature to treat excessive heat in the interior manifested as constipation and abdominal distention with fever and thirst, as occurring in damp-heat dysentery, stagnation of undigested food, and retention of water.

✵Warm purgation:  method of inducing purgation with herbs warm in nature to treat stagnation of food or accumulation of pathogenic factors marked by a cold syndrome, e.g., constipation and abdominal pain with cold extremities and white tongue coating.

✵Warm-purgation of cold accumulation:  method of administering warming herbs with cathartics, for treating constipation due to cold congealing in cases of Yang deficiency.

✵Laxation:  therapeutic method with mild action to relieve constipation.

✵Lubricant laxation:  method of inducing laxation with lubricants for the treatment of constipation due to intestinal dryness.

✵Drastic purgation: therapeutic method with drastic action to cause purgation.

✵Timely purgation to preserve yin:  therapeutic method for persistent high fever and impairment of body fluid by administering drastic cathartics to purge excessive heat to prevent further loss of fluid, also known as timely purgation to preserve fluid.

✵Timely purgation to preserve fluid: same as timely purgation to preserve Yin.

✵Increasing fluid to induce laxation:  synonymous with moistening the intestines to loose the bowels.

✵Moistening the intestines to loose the bowels:  treatment for constipation due to intestinal dryness.

✵Unblocking the bowels and purging heat: therapeutic method of removing internal heat by catharsis, also abbreviated as unblocking and purging.

✵Unblocking and purging:  abbreviation for unblocking the bowels and purging heat.

✵Hydrogogue therapy: therapeutic method of producing a watery discharge, especially from the bowels.

✵Driving out water by catharsis:  method of eliminating water retention by using hydrogogue.

✵Driving out retained water:  synonymous with driving out water by catharsis.

✵Expelling retained fluid by catharsis:  method of treating retained fluid by catharsis.

✵Mild purgation:  method of causing bowel movement with mild laxative herbs.

✵Taking away firewood from under the cauldron: metaphorical expression for the method of clearing heat or fire by purgation.

✵Eliminating the stale and the stagnant:  an ancient term for the elimination of retained water and stagnant blood.

✵Eliminating stagnant blood by catharsis:  method of using purgatives together with stasis-resolving herbs for treating blood stasis.

✵Elimination before tonification: therapy of attacking the pathogenic factors first and then administering tonics for recuperation.

✵Tonification before elimination: therapy administering tonics to improve the patient's general condition first and then driving the pathogenic factors out.

✵Elimination and tonification in combination: therapy to strengthen the body resistance and eliminate pathogenic factors simultaneously.
