 Brief introduction: The herb Sanguis Draconis is red resin secreted from the fruit of Daemonorops draco Bl., used to eliminate blood stasis, relieve pain and promote the healing of wounds for the treatment of traumatic injuries. The herb is commonly known as Sanguis Draconis, Dragon's Blood, Xuè Jié.

 Botanical source: Herbal classic book defined the herb Sanguis Draconis (Dragon's Blood) as the red resin secreted from the fruit of the species Daemonorops draco Bl. It is a plant species of the Daemonorops Bl. genus, the Palmae family (Arecaceae family) of the Principes order. This commonly used species is introduced:

 Daemonorops draco Bl.:growing plant Botanical description: The plant, Daemonorops draco Bl is commonly known as Qí Lín Jié (Qí Lín means kylin, Chinese unicorn, mascots in ancient legends, the male is known as Qí, the female is known as Lín.), also known as Lóng Xuě Téng. A perennial evergreen vine, it grows up to 10–20 meters long. Stems are covered with leaf sheaths and pointed spines. Pinnately compound leaves are alternate and grow on branch tips, sometimes subopposite at the lower part; petioles and rhachis have spiculate thorns; lobules (leaflets) are alternate, linear-lanceolate, about 20–30 cm long, about 3 cm wide, the front end is sharp-pointed, the base is narrow, ternate vein (trinervious), parallel;

 Spadix, with pale yellow cristated flowers, unisexual, dioecious; 6 perianths, arranged in 2 whorls; the male flower has 6 stamens, and anthers are long conical; the female flower has 6 sterile stamens, 1 pistil, doliform (bottle-shaped), ovary is slightly oval (egg-shaped), densely covered with scales (densely scaly), style is short, stigma is 3-parted. 

 Fruit is drupelike, ovoid, about 2~3 cm in diameter, russet (reddish-brown), with yellow scales, and contains deep red liquid resin, often oozing from under the scales, similar to blood clots when it is dried; the fruit contains one seed.

 Daemonorops draco Bl.:growing plant Ecological environment: The tree is cultivated in Guangdong and Taiwan in China. It is also cultivated on the Islands of Southeast Asia.

 Characters of herbs: The herb is slightly round, oblate spheroid, square, or square brick-shaped, irregular blocks, and varies in size, the surface is russet (reddish brown), red, brick red, and the fracture surface is glossy. The texture of the herb is hard and brittle (crisp), the broken surface is red or blackish-red, glossy, and the ground powder is sanguine. The herb has a slight odor, and it has a mild taste. The herb is insoluble in water, and softened in hot water.

 Pharmacological actions: The herb sanguis draconis has ①.antifungal action: sanguis draconis water infusion in the tube show different degrees of inhibition on trichoderma violaceum, trichophyton gypseum, achorion schoenleinii and other pathogenic pathomycete; ②.hemostasis effect: the herb sanguis draconis can significantly shorten the time of rabbit plasma recalcification, thus increasing its coagulation effect.

 Medicinal efficacy: Invigorate the circulation of blood and relieve pain, dissolving accumulated stasis of blood and stanch bleeding, promoting granulation (promote tissue regeneration), astringing sores (healing sores). It is indicated for injuries from falls, stasis and pain in heart and abdomen, internal wounds and bruises, menorrhalgia (dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain after menstruation), postpartum obstruction of abdominal pain (obstruction and abdominal pain after childbirth), bleeding wound, unhealing sores, scrofula (glandular phthisis, lymphoid tuberculosis), ecthyma ulcerate and unhealing for a long time (chronic ulcer of shank ulcerate but unhealing for a long time), hemorrhoids, etc.
