Brief introduction: The herb Cortex Albiziae is the dried bark of Albizia julibrissin Durazz.(family Leguminosae), used (1).as a tranquilizer for palpitations and insomnia due to anxiety, and (2).to relieve pain by activating blood circulation for treating painful traumatic swellings or boils and sores. The herb is commonly known as Cortex Albiziae, silktree albizia bark, bark of silktree albizzia, Hé Huān Pí.
Botanical source: Common official herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Cortex Albiziae as the dry bark or cortex of the plant species (1). Albizia julibrissin Durazz. It is a plant of the albizia durazz genus, the Leguminosae family of the Rosales order. This commonly used species is introduced as:
(1).Albizia julibrissin Durazz.: Botanical description: The Albizia julibrissin Durazz., is a plant of the Fabaceae(Leguminosae) and Albizia genus, commonly known as Hé Huān, deciduous trees, it grows up to 16 meters high. Tree trunks are grayish-black; twigs, inflorescences, and leaf shafts are tomentose or pubescent.
Stipules linear-lanceolate, smaller leaves are smaller, caducous; 2-pinnate, compound, alternate; total petiole is 3~5 cm long, total pedicel near the base and 1 inmost one pair of plumes bearing one on each gland; 4~12 pairs of pinnae, sometimes up to 20 pairs cultivated; 10~30 pairs of leaflets, linear to oblong, 6~12 mm long, 1~4 mm wide, obliquely upward, apex tipped, margined hair, sometimes pubescent below or only midrib; midrib pressed against upper margin.
Inflorescences arranging at cones converently in large debate inflorescences; pink flowers; calyx tubular, 3 mm long; corolla 8 mm long, lobes are triangular, 1.5 mm long, calyx, corolla pubescent outside; stamens are numerous, basally connate, filaments are slender; upper ovary, style as long as filaments, stigma is cylindrical.
Follicle banding, 9~15 cm long, 1.5~2.5 cm wide, tender and tender hairy, old hairless. Its flowering period is from June to July, fruiting from August to October.
Ecological environment: The Albizia julibrissin Durazz., grows on hillsides and roadsides and is often cultivated in gardens. Geographical distribution: This species mainly distributes in China throughout the Yellow River Basin to the Pearl River Valley. This species was native to the Yellow River Basin of China, and the southern part of the Americas, and now it distributes in East Asia, Central Asia, also cultivated in the American continent.
Growth characteristics: The Albizia julibrissin Durazz., enjoys warm, moist, and sunny conditions. The plant is adaptable to climate and soil and should be well-drained and fertile. However, it is also resistant to infertile soil and arid climate, but it is not resistant to waterlog. The plant grows quickly, it prefers light, warmth, cold-tolerance, drought-tolerance, soil barrenness, and mild saline-alkali, it has a strong resistance to harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride.
Characters of herbs: Dry bark, tubular or half tubular, up to 30 cm long, 1 to 2 mm thick. The outer surface is rough, grayish-green or grayish brown, scattered with fine cracks, slight longitudinal wrinkles, lenticels are round or oblong, reddish-brown. The inner surface is light brown or light yellow, with fine longitudinal lines. The bark is hard and brittle, cross-section light yellow, fibrous. It is slight fragrant, mild taste. The herb which cortex is thin and even, tender and smooth is better.
Pharmacological actions: ①.Antifertility effect: The cold water extract of Cortex Albiziae has significant antifertility action; ②.Anti-allergic effect: water decoction of Cortex Albiziae can inhibit the degranulation of peritoneal mast cells in rats by intragastric administration, and it also has a similar effect in vitro; ③.Anti-tumor effect: The polysaccharide of the Cortex Albiziae inhibited mouse transplanted tumor S180 by an inhibition ratio of 73%.
Medicinal efficacy: Dispel melancholy and calm the nerves(relieve uneasiness of mind and body tranquilization), harmonize the blood, tranquilization and peace the heart, invigorate blood circulation and reduce swelling. It is indicated for have the fidgets(not feel easy in one's mind), melancholy, insomnia(lose sleep), abscess of lung, carbuncle swelling, internal and external carbuncle, sores swelling, scrofula(lymphoid tuberculosis), broken bones and muscles, traumatic injury, traumatic injury of falls, etc.

Characters of herbs: The Albizia Flower crumpled into a cluster. It is commonly known as Hé Huān Huā. Flowers slender and curved, 0.7~1 cm long, yellowish-brown or yellowish-brown, shortly pedicellate. Calyx tubular, apex 5 denticulate, sparsely pubescent; Corolla tube about 2 times as long as calyx tube, apex 5-lobed, lobes lanceolate, sparsely pubescent; Stamens numerous, filaments slender, yellowish-brown or tawny, lower connate, upper part detached, protruding from coronal tube. The flower easily breaks, slightly fragrant, mild taste.
The Albizia flower bud is commonly known as Hé Huān Mǐ(literally means rice of albizia), it is gritty, turquoise or yellow-green, hairy. The one/third part of the lower part is enclosed by the calyx tube.
Pharmacological actions: Central Inhibition: Experimental study showed that Albizia Flower decoction could significantly reduce the spontaneous and passive activities of mice, and significantly synergistic with the central inhibitory effect of barbiturates.
Medicinal efficacy: Dispel melancholy, calm the nerves(relieve uneasiness of mind and body tranquilization), regulate Qi, appetizing, activating collaterals, dispelling wind and improving eyesight, activating blood and relieving pain. It is indicated for upset and ill at ease(not feel ease in one's mind), melancholy and insomnia, Qi stagnation and oppression in chest, oppression in chest and anorexia(sense of suppression in the chest, poor appetite), insomnia, amnesia(forgettery and poor memory), acute conjunctivitis due to pathogenic wind-fire, blurred vision, pharyngalgia(sore pharynx), carbuncle swelling, lumbago(low back pain), injury and pain from falls, etc.
