Latin Name: Magnetitum.
Property and flavor: cold, salty.
Brief introduction: The herb Magnetitum is the magnetic iron ore composed mainly of ferriferous oxide(Fe3O4), used as a settling tranquilizer and antiasthmatic for the treatment of tinnitus, palpitation, insomnia, epilepsy, and mania, and also used for relieving asthma. The herb is commonly known as Magnetitum, Magnetite, Cí Shí.
Mineral source: Common herbal classics and other famous herbal classics defined the herb Magnetitum(Magnetite) as the magnetic iron ore composed mainly of ferriferous oxide(Fe3O4). This commonly used mineral is introduced as:
Magnetite.: Description: Magnetite: equiaxed crystal system. Crystal is octahedral, a few for the diamond dodecahedron, crystal surface often parallel stripes. Usually, granular or dense clumps appear. The color is iron black; Crystals are sometimes tinged with light indigo. The stripe is black. Semi-metallic luster. Opaque. No cleavage. The fracture is conchoidal or jagged. Hardness is 5.5~6.5. Specific gravity is 4.9~5.2. Crispy. It is strongly magnetic. It is found in many magmatic and metamorphic rocks; Beach sand is also common.
Distribution: It mainly produces in the north, the lower reaches area of the Yangtze River, and other areas of China. It is also available in other areas of the world North America, Brazil, Australia.
Characters of herbs: the mineral is irregular block shape, has edge angle, size is different. The surface is iron black to tan, opaque, metallic luster; Some dull or covered with a little brown powder; Some are rough and with a few pinhole pores; Some contain impurities of yellow or other colors. It is weight, hard, difficult to break, irregular section. It smells like earth. A live magnet can attract iron. The dead magnet cannot attract iron, red-brown color, usually have pores, more impurities, and easily broken. The black, shiny, strong iron absorption ability is better. After heating to 480 ℃, the magnetism disappeared suddenly and recovered after cooling. It is insoluble in water and nitric acid. It is soluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid, the solution is orange-yellow, the solution shows various special reactions of iron compounds.
Pharmacological actions: The herb magnetitum can inhibit the central nervous system, has a sedative, anti-convulsive effect, and after processing the effect is obviously enhanced. The herb magnetitum has a blood tonic effect on iron deficiency anemia, but also anti-inflammatory, analgesic effect, and promote coagulation.
Medicinal efficacy: Relieving convulsion, calm the nerves(relieve uneasiness of mind and body tranquilization), calm the liver and suppress yang(suppressing hyperactive liver and subsiding yang), suppressing hyper-yang to enhance respiration, improving hearing and improving eyesight(improving acuity of vision), promoting inspiration to relieve asthma. It is indicated for palpitation, insomnia(agrypnia, lose sleep), dizziness, dazzled, blurred vision(dim eyesight), tinnitus and deafness(ringing in the ears, deafness), kidney deficiency and asthma, deficiency and asthma, convulsive epilepsy, palpitation, etc.

Internally:9~30 grams, better add earlier for decoction(CP), Internally:water decoction, 0.3~1 liang(about 9~30 grams), or prepare to pill, powder. Externally:grinded into powder, mixed or apply stick(DCTM), Internally:water decoction, 10~30 grams, better break and add earlier for decoction, or prepare to pill. Externally:proper amount, grinded into powder, apply stick(CHMM).
