Cough.
✵Cough: cough is mainly due to exogenous and endogenous pathogens, which is a syndrome mainly affects the lung system.
✵The five-Zang viscera and six-Fu viscera all lead to cough, these types of cough could be classified into different types: cough due to five-Zang viscera and six-Fu viscera, except the five-Zang viscera cough, there are also wind cough, cold cough, chronic cough, gallbladder cough, Jue Yin cough and so on, in general, later herbalist classified them into exogenous type coughs and endogenous type cough.
Common Syndromes of Cough.
✦The common cough syndromes are introduced as:
✧Pathogen hosted in the lung and cold heat Qi rising up, panting(heavily breath), perspiration, cough and lead to movement of shoulders and back, sounding in throat, cough and lift one's neck, in severe cases even vomit blood, this is the condition of lung cough, lung cough could not be relieved in long period, will transfer to the large intestine, its symptoms cough and involuntary defecation; these are syndromes of lung cough and large intestine cough;
✧In the condition of kidney cough, symptoms pain radiating to back and low back, cough and tinnitus or lost hearing in ears, lead the low back going to bellybutton, in serious case even cough with phlegm and saliva, the kidney cough could not be relieved in long period, will transfer to urinary bladder, its symptoms cough with anischuria(enuresis); these are syndromes of kidney cough and urinary bladder cough;
✧In the condition of liver cough, its symptoms pain in the left hypochondria region(left flank), or pain below the hypochondriac region(pain below the costal region), in severe case could not turn around, liver cough could not be relieved in long period, will transfer to the gallbladder, its symptoms cough with clear liquid spit out, pain radiating to head(headache or cephalea), bitterness in mouth; these are syndromes of liver cough and gallbladder cough;
✧In the condition of heart cough, symptoms pain radiating to the heart, obstruct in the larynx(blocking in the throat), in severe case numbness in larynx and swelling pharynx, and might vomit blood, radiating to hand Shao Yin; heart cough could not be relieved in long period, will transfer to the small intestine, its symptoms cough and lost breath; these are syndromes of heart cough and small intestine cough;
✧In the condition of spleen cough, symptoms pain in right hypochondriac region(right flank), pain radiating to the back and should hidden, in severe case could not move, or if move(or turn around) will lead to severe cough, spleen cough could not be relieved for a long period, will transfer to stomach, its symptoms cough and vomit; these are syndromes of spleen cough and stomach cough;
✧Chronic cough could not be relieved, will affect the triple energizer, the symptoms of triple energizer cough, cough with abdominal fullness, could not take food or drink, this is the condition of triple energizer cough;
✧In the condition want to speak, and stopped by cough, this is the syndrome of wind cough, should not use purgative method;
✧In the condition take cold diet and drink cold water, and cough due to these, is the syndrome of cold cough;
✧Hard and fullness below the heart, cough and lead to branch pain, retarded pulse or slow pulse, is the syndrome of branch cough;
✧Cough and traction of tongue body, is the syndrome of Jue Yin cough;
✧Chronic cough turns to Shui(ancient syndrome name), cough with regular fever, this is not due to deficiency, but caused by an excess cold pathogen in the chest, should induce vomit;
✧Cough, pulse string-like, should observe weak or strong and without heat, then could use induce vomit method;
✧Cough, pulse string-like, there is water inside;
✧Cough, due to prolonged fluid retention, symptoms cough and could not sleep, pain radiating to neck region, cough like a baby in spasm, this is the condition of prolonged fluid retention cough;
✧Cough, addict to alcohol(or hobby to drink alcohol), surely lead to vomit blood, due to sitting for a long time and over drink, in the case pulse sinking, should not induce perspiration;
✧Chronic cough, for years, in case pulse weak, treatable, in case pulse forceful big and rapid, could not be treated;
✧Cough, pulse feeble, surely will perspire, for diaphragm retention of fluid in the lung, treatment should follow principle for fluid-retention syndrome; rising Qi perspire and cough(Qi counter flow upward, sweating, cough), is the condition of fluid-retention syndrome;
✧Cough, urination free as enuresis(anischuria), should not induce perspiration(sweating), or if sweating then will cold limbs;
✧Vomit blood, cough and rising of Qi, pulse rapid with heat, could not sleep, will die;
✧Cold condition, cough and rising of Qi, pulse rapid, will die, for body shape hurt;
✧Pulse large and scattered, the case pulse scattered is the condition Qi excess and blood deficiency, known as exterior and no interior, rising of Qi, edema on face, dyspnea with elevated shoulders, in case pulse floating and big, could not be treated, severe if with diarrhea or dysentery;
✧Rising of Qi, vexation and panting(heavily breath, gasp), is the condition of lung distention, will lead to the wind-water syndrome, should induce perspiration;
✧Cough, dyspnea in semireclining position and could not sleep; plus or minus cases: in case of thirst; in case of slight diarrhea; in case of gag or choking due to food and drink; in case difficulty in urination, fullness in lower abdomen; in case panting;
✧Previous condition, already treated, symptoms much spit and dryness in mouth, cunkou pulse sinking, chi pulse weak, cold limbs(cold in hands and feet), rising of Qi from lower abdomen to the chest and pharynx, numbness in hands and feet, heat on face and looks like drunken, and flow down to Yin regions, difficulty in urination, and sweating regularly;
✧Adversely ascending Qi of thoroughfare vessel(Chong Qi) lowered but on the contrary cough again, fullness in the chest;
✧Cough fullness and stopped, then more thirst, Adversely ascending Qi of thoroughfare vessel(Chong Qi) re-attack, take heat prescription and should thirst, but thirst relieved, is the condition of diaphragm retention of fluid(Zhi Yin, fluid-retention syndrome characterized by dyspnea and edema), in the case of Zhi Yin should sweat on head, sweating on head surely vomit, should discharge the water and dampness; Water discharged, swelling body, for the numbness, should use...;in the case blood deficiency, should not use...;
✧Heat on the face as drunken, this is mainly due to heat rising from the stomach, and warm the face and ear;
✧Cough and rising of Qi, swelling in the lung, its pulse floating, water Qi pathogen accumulated below the heart, pain below the costal region(hypochondriac pain) and pain radiating to Que Pen(supraclavicular fossa), in the case excess surely vexation(upset, vexed), the person often depend on for existence and lie hidden, should use...;(same as it used for lung swelling, cough and rising of Qi, vexation and panting, pulse floating, water accumulation below the heart by herbalist Zhang Zhongjing.)
✧Rising of Qi, cough, pulse sinking;
✧Rising of Qi, great counter flow, bad throat(not free in the throat, choking or blocking), should relieve counter flow and descending Qi;
✧Cough and rising of Qi, water chicken sounding in the larynx(sounding in the throat);
✧Cough and rising of Qi, great counter flow, fullness in chest(choking sensation in chest, sense of suppression in the chest), bad throat(not free in throat, choking or blocking), water chicken sounding in the larynx(water chicken sounding is ancient syndrome name, water chicken or Shui Ji, normally means frogs or a kind of earthenware or pottery in ancient time which could sound when adding some water in it and blow it with mouth, similar to a kind of whistle, its symptoms phlegm sounding in the larynx), pulse floating;
✧Rising of Qi, fullness in chest(choking sensation in the chest, sense of suppression in the chest);
✧Cough and rising of Qi, spit turbid phlegm regularly, could only sit but could not sleep;
✧In case of diaphragm retention of fluid(Zhi Yin), cough and vexation, pain in chest, not die suddenly;
✧Cough, pain radiating to hypochondria, should use...;
✧Cough after eating one's fill, should use..., take warmly; in case of pain in the larynx, sounding, plus...;
✧Cough, could not sleep in day and night, two eyes protruding(projecting);
✧Cough and diarrhea, distention in the lung and short of breath, palpitation in the heart regularly, limbs do not want to move, heat in hands and feet and vexation in heart, no appetite(do not want to take food), pain in shoulders and back, aversion to cold regularly;
✧Cough and rising of Qi, edema and swelling body, short of breath and distention, laying on the wall in day and night, could not sleep, water chicken sounding in pharynx(symptoms phlegm sounding in the larynx);
✧Cough due to nine kinds of Qi, desire to die;
✧Cough due to rising of Qi;
✧Cough due to rising of Qi for a long period, smelly in the larynx, affected by deficiency Qi pathogen, pain in the heart and cold pain, ringing in ears, wind pathogen invading, or seasonal pathogen, take food but not grow muscles, choking in the chest, vomit and much spit, nausea, hard and full below the heart, drink more water and take less food, pestilent abdominalgia, straining pain; plus and minus cases: in case dream communicate and drink food with ghost, in case indigestion, in case wind, in case prolonged fluid retention;
✧Cough, distension and fullness in chest and hypochondria, much spit and rising of Qi;
✧Cough, rising of Qi, not free in nose(rhinobyon, nasal obstruction, stuffy nose);
✧Sudden severe cough and lose voice(aphonia), could not speak;
✧Sudden cough due to heat;
✧New and chronic cough;
✧Cough over ten years to thirty years, sometimes retained fluid and sometimes cough, cold pathogen affection;
✧Chronic cough, hardly recovery;
✧ Qi-obstructing cough(cough due to disorder of vital energy), chronic and over tens or thirty years, cough and spit pus with blood, panting(gasp for breath) and could not sleep;
✧Lung hurt, cough and spit pus with blood, intestine astringent, no appetite(could not take food), aversion to wind, dim eyesight and blurred vision, cold in feet and shank;
✧Cough, spit with pus and blood, dragging pain to chest and hypochondria;
✧Cough, discharge blood(bloody stool) and unstoppable;
✧Cough, can not breathe(short of breath, heavily breath, panting), spit pus and blood;
