Cough:introduction of pathological reasons, syndrome differentiation and common syndromes.

Syndromes of Traditional Chinese Medicine. ✵Traditional Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years. Through thousands of years of practice, it has been proved that Chinese medicine is effective and feasible in treating diseases, preventing diseases and maintaining health. The treatment of diseases with traditional Chinese medicine has saved countless lives. The treatment of diseases in traditional Chinese medicine is macro and comprehensive.

The theoretical system of traditional Chinese medicine is derived from and guided by long-term clinical practice. Through the analysis of the phenomenon, the internal mechanism is explored. Therefore, this unique theoretical system of traditional Chinese medicine has two basic characteristics, one is the overall-concept, the other is the dialectical treatment.

Cough.

✵Cough: cough is mainly due to exogenous and endogenous pathogens, which is a syndrome mainly affects the lung system.

The ancient classical works Neijing (the Inner Canon) explains: "five Zang-viscera and six Fu-viscera, all leads to cough, not only lungs."

In general, the exogenous pathogenic factors are from the outside, known as wind, cold, summer heat, humidity, dryness and fire; the endogenous pathogenic factors are from the interior, known as seven emotions, hunger, satiety, consumptive hurt, etc.

Identify coughs: cough is also known as ké, it is defined as the absence of phlegm and the presence of sound; sòu is defined as the absence of sound and the presence of phlegm.

Cause of cough: in general, one cause is internal injury, seven emotions, hunger and satiety; another cause is external affections, wind, cold, summer heat and humidity, etc.

Internal reasons of cough: there are various internal reasons, fire stagnation, fire heat, damp-phlegm, dyspepsia (indigestion with food accumulation produces phlegm), stomach fire, Yin deficiency, internal lesion caused by overexertion (consumptive hurt), Qi stagnation (Qi stagnation hurts and develops to cough), phlegm, retained water, lung dryness, lung distension, blood stasis, hurt from wine, kidney deficiency, coughing for a long time and develops to pulmonary abscess, and consumptive lung disease.

External reasons of cough:pathogenic wind hurts the lungs, cold injures the lungs, or the spleen and lungs are affected by cold, summer heat hurts the lungs, dampness hurts the lungs, dampness injures the spleen, and affection from seasonal pathogenic factors, all of them are suddenly affected by pathogens, it must be accompanied by symptoms of headache and body heat.

Symptoms: The various types of cough syndromes exhibit different symptoms, as well as concurrent symptoms, in addition to the cough itself.

Different types of coughs: new and chronic cough, deficient and excess cough, cough of exogenous pathogens, cough of endogenous hurts, cough of the four seasons, cough of day and night, etc. These various types of cough syndromes are introduced.

New cough and chronic cough, deficient and excess cough.
Common Syndromes of Cough.
New and chronic cough: the syndromes of cough, has differences between new and chronic, deficiency and excess.

The new cough, mainly due to excessive pathogens in the lungs, wind, coldness, heat, fire, dampness, and phlegm. There are chronic diseases, and suddenly coughing is also a new cough, surely hurt by wind or diet.

Chronic cough, belongs to deficiency and stagnation.

There are cough due to Qi deficiency, or blood deficiency, or blood deficiency and fire excess, pant for breath and cough with hoarse voice, or deficiency of Qi and blood, or cough of consumptive disease, with phlegm heat thirst and sweating; or cough of consumptive type with blood phlegm and panting; or cough of consumptive type without phlegm, fever at night, cold after it, dreaminess; or cough with voice but no phlegm, fire stagnation in lungs; chronic cough hurt spleens and has sores on face; chronic cough and lose voices, chronic cough and not relieved after taking various herb prescriptions, different from cough of consumptive type; there is phlegm stagnation and pathogenic fire stagnant in the interior and develops to dry cough.

Cough of exogenous pathogens.
Common Syndromes of Cough.
Cough syndromes of exogenous pathogens: there are various cough syndromes due to exogenous pathogenic factors, these syndromes are introduced.

Cough of wind-cold pathogen: at the onset of wind and cold affection, headache and stuffy nose, fever and aversion to cold, coughing.

Cough of cold direct affection: cold pathogens affect the interior, and cough.

Cough of summer heat hurting lungs: summer heat hurt the lungs, thirst, vexation, urine is reddish.

Cough of phlegm from dampness: dampness generates phlegm, phlegm and saliva are thick and sticky.

Cough of autumn dryness hurting lungs: autumn dryness hurts lungs, dry cough without phlegm.

Cold cough: one is affected by a pathogenic cold, drink cold drinks and catch it.

Heat cough: there are sudden heat coughs and chronic heat coughs.

The sudden heat cough is mainly due to a seasonal heat pathogen attacking the lungs, with symptoms such as shortness of breath, thirst, obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, swelling and pain in the throat.

The chronic heat cough is mainly due to not relieving from wind and cold affection for long days, generates fire and hurts the lungs, with symptoms of cough with turbid phlegm, dysphoria with smothery sensation and thirst, or vomit purulent matter, or incessant fever, and develops to pulmonary overstrain.

Stagnant heat cough: the cough of stagnant heat, is due to lung heat first, and cold affects it again later, heat is stagnant by pathogenic cold, lungs cannot open, then suddenly cough and panting, with symptoms aversion to cold, often fever, dryness in mouth, pain in throat, or loss of voice.

Cough of Zang and Fu-viscera.
Common Syndromes of Cough.
Cough of Zang and Fu-viscera: the exogenous pathogen affection is in the lungs at the initial stage, coughing and unstoppable, it moves to five Zang-viscera, and cough from Zang-viscera is incessant, it moves to six Fu-viscera. The syndromes of cough in Zang and Fu-viscera are introduced:

Cough of lung viscus: the cough of lungs, panting with sounds, in severe conditions, one spitting blood, it belongs to the lungs, and is coughing blood of wind and cold.

Cough of the lungs is incessant (unstoppable), the large intestines are affected, and coughing leads to incontinence of feces.

Cough of the heart viscus: pain in the heart, obstruction in the throat, in severe condition swelling in the throat and pharyngitis.

Cough of heart is incessant (unstoppable), fart, belongs to small intestine.

Cough of spleen viscus: pain in the right hypochondria, radiating pain to shoulders and back, in severe condition one cannot move, move and cough is aggravated.

Cough of spleen is incessant (unstoppable), stomach is affected, cough and vomit, parasites come out.

Cough of liver viscus: pain in the left hypochondrium, one could not turn around in severe condition, fullness in the two hypochondria when one turns around.

Cough of the liver is incessant (unstoppable), the gallbladder is affected, and cough and vomiting out bile (bitter water).

Cough of kidney viscus: radiating pain between waist and back, tongue is dry, salty in throat, in severe condition it is salty.

Cough of the kidney is incessant (unstoppable), the urinary bladder is affected, and there is cough and enuresis (urinary incontinence).

Cough of triple energizer: coughing is incessant (unstoppable), the triple energizers are affected, coughing and fullness in abdomen, no appetite (do not want to take diet or drink ), many tears and saliva, edema of face and eyes, reverse flow of Qi.

Cough of pericardium: a dull pain in the chest, a cough of pericardium.

Cough of endogenous hurts.
Common Syndromes of Cough.
Cough of endogenous hurt: there are coughs due to endogenous hurts, these cough syndromes of endogenous hurts are introduced.

Cough of kidney deficiency: kidney deficiency, heat in the interior, pulse is thready and rapid.

Cough of lung deficiency: pathogenic factors affect the lungs and generate deficient heat (asthenic fever).

Cough of consumption: the disease is severe and in depth, develops to consumption, itching in throat (laryngeal itching), and coughing.

Cough of dyspepsia: if one is hurt by dyspepsia, dry mouth and stuffiness, cough turns severe an hour before dawn, it is due to fire from dyspepsia.

Cough of spleen insufficiency: one has spleen insufficiency, no appetite (does not want to take food), weakness of Qi.

Hydrogenic cough (cough of retained fluid): the cough of retained fluid is mainly due to drink retained in the chest, and leads to coughing, with symptoms panting and cough with abnormal rising of Qi, oppression in chest and diaphragm, difficult to lie on one's back.

Dyspeptic cough (cough due to dyspepsia): dyspeptic cough, it is also known as cough due to dyspepsia or indigestion, mainly due to taking much diet and meat, indigested food turns to rotten and turbid things, flows up to the lungs, and develops to coughing.

Dry cough: dry cough is also known as irritating dry cough, or cough caused by dryness, the lungs are dry, and affected by pathogenic dryness. Its symptoms are severe coughing with little saliva, dry throat, choking and obstruction in breathing.

Deficiency-cold cough: the deficiency-cold cough, due to Yang insufficiency in the upper and middle, coldness motivates from the middle.

Renal cough: kidney deficiency, circulation of Qi in the wrong direction. The ancient classical work Neijing states: coughing, and vexed, is the reverse flow of kidney Qi. With symptoms of coughing and panting with excessive phlegm, or panting or distension, hypersalivation, coldness in feet and atrophic debility of bones.

Cough with aphonia: cough with aphonia (loss of voice), there are differences between new and chronic, new coughs are mostly excessive type, phlegm fire is stagnant, chronic coughs are mostly deficient, lungs are hurt and Qi exhaustion.

Cough of the four seasons.
Common Syndromes of Cough.
Cough of the four seasons:there are cough syndromes in the four seasons, these cough syndromes are introduced.

Cough in spring: in the spring, the Qi rising upward. One starts to cough when spring comes, it is normally a spleen disease.

Cough in summer: in the summer, the climate is hot, pathogenic heat affects the lungs, and one often coughs due to pathogenic heat.

Cough in autumn: in the autumn, the climate is cooling and dry, pathogenic dryness affects the lungs, one often coughs due to dryness. One starts to cough at the end of autumn, and relieves till next summer, it is coldness stagnant heat.

Cough in winter: in the winter, pathogenic wind and coldness affect externally.

Cough of day and night:
Common Syndromes of Cough.
Cough of day and night: there are cough syndromes in the different time of a day, these cough syndromes are introduced.

One coughs just before dawn, or much phlegm just before dawn, or much phlegm in the morning, in general, it is due to insufficiency of the spleen.

One does not cough in the daytime and at night, but coughs several times in the morning.

If one coughs in the daytime and at night, and coughs seriously in the morning, there is dyspepsia in the stomach.

One coughs in the upper part of a day, phlegm is thick and yellow, due to stomach fire.

One coughs after noon, phlegm is black, viscous and sticky, fire motivation from Yin deficiency.

Likewise, one coughs at sunset, hyperactivity of deficient fire, Yang insufficiency and Yin deficiency in the kidney.

Adult or child, suddenly coughs two to three times in deep sleep at sunset, there is phlegm due to dyspepsia (indigestion).

One coughs after midnight, due to wind.

One coughs mildly in the daytime but coughs heavily at night, insufficiency of blood.

Likewise, one coughs between sunset and dawn, the cough before midnight belongs to excess, and the cough after midnight belongs to deficiency.

Incurable syndromes of cough:
Common Syndromes of Cough.
There are incurable syndromes of cough, these syndromes are introduced:

According to ancient works Ling Shu (the Spiritual Pivot or Divine Axis), two types of cough syndromes are incurable type: one coughs, thin and weak, the pulse is tense and large; one coughs, overly leptystic, fever, the pulse is small and tense.

According to other ancient works, incurable types of cough syndromes are:

 One coughs and pants till distension of lungs and has pharyngeal ulcer, aphonia (loss of voice);

One coughs and pants, vomiting blood, abnormal rising of Qi, cannot fall asleep, the pulse is rapid, has fever.

One has a chronic cough, the cough is incessant, it develops to tuberculosis and aphonia (loss of voice), or soreness in the throat.

Cough and distension in the lungs, stagnation and melancholy, cannot fall asleep, it difficult.
