Botanical description: Fritillaria ussuriensis Maxim is also known as Pínɡ Bèi Mǔ. Herbs, the plant grows up to 40~60 cm tall. Squamous bulbs are 1~1.4 cm thick, consisting of two incrassated cuiller (cuilleron), with a few bulblets around. There are leaves that grow on part above the base, whorled or opposite, and a few are scattered and grow above the middle part; leaves are strip-shaped, 9~15 cm long, 2~6 cm wide, and the apex is unconvoluted or slightly curly.
1~3 flowers, terminal, pendulous, purple with yellow squares; apical flowers have 4~6 leaflike bracts, strip-shaped bracts' apex is extremely curly; the perianth is campanulate (bell-shaped); 6 tepals, oblong-obovate, obtuse, nectary is over the base; 6 stamens, its length is about 3/5 of the tepal; style is papillary; stigma is 3 deeply parted.
Capsularfruit is broadly obovate, with rounded ribs. Its flowering period is from May to June.
Ecological environment: The plant grows in fertile soils in forests. Resource distribution: The plant is mainly distributed in the northern area of China.
Growth characteristics: The plant prefers cold, cool and wet climates, is resistant to cold, afraid of drought, and hot, and can withstand a low temperature of -37 °C (Celsius, or -34.6 degrees Fahrenheit), when the above-ground temperature is 28 °C (Celsius, or 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit), the plants on the ground wither. From the seedling to wilt, the growing period is about 60 days. It is appropriate to choose a field with deep soil layers, loose, moist and humus-rich sandy loam for cultivation.
Characters of herbs: The herb is oblate, 0.5~1 cm high, and 0.6~2 cm in diameter. The surface is cream white (milky white) or light yellowish white, and the outer layer has 2 scale leaves, incrassated and hypertrophic, similar in size, or one scale is slightly larger, slightly flat, or slightly concave at the top, often slightly cracked; the central scales are small.
