Biography and legends:

張璧Zhāng Bì Zhang Bi (張璧, Zhāng Bì), also known as Yun Qizi, was a herbalist from the Jin Dynasty who was born in Yizhou. He was the son of the renowned herbalist Zhang Yuansu. His exact years are unknown, but he lived during the 12th to 13th century. He was an expert in pulse study and also studied the theory of Shang Han Lun (the Treatise on Cold-induced Diseases).

Main books and academic thoughts:

Zhang Bi's works on the Shang Han Lun (the Treatise on Cold-induced Diseases) include the Shang Han Bao Ming Ji. His other works include the 《脈談》(Mai Tan, or Discussion of Pulse) and 《醫學新說》(Yi Xue Xin Shuo, or New Medical Theory), among others, were also published.

Shang Han Bao Ming Ji (Life-saving Collection of Shang Han) is a book on the study of Shang Han Lun (the Treatise on Cold-induced Diseases). Its other name is Yun Qi Zi Bao Ming Ji Lun Lei Yao (Categorized Summary of Yun Qi Zi's Life-saving Collection). This two-volume book was compiled by Zhang Bi. The book discusses the syndromes of Shang Han, the main prescriptions, and the variant prescriptions of Shang Han (exogenous febrile diseases), as well as their indications. It distinguishes cold-induced diseases from warm diseases. It introduces the acupuncture method for Shang Han syndromes, miscellaneous syndromes of Shang Han, as well as Shang Han transmission and deteriorated case, and some common miscellaneous internal diseases. The indications are clear, and the selected prescriptions are mostly practical. A section on pediatric diseases is included at the end. It was later compiled into the book series Ji Sheng Ba Cui (The Essence for Succouring Sick).

Yun Qi Zi Mai Jue (The Pulse Formulas of Yun Qi Zi) is a book on pulse studies. Its full name is Yun Qi Zi Qi Biao Ba Li Jiu Dao Mai Jue Lun Bing Zhi Fa (the Pulse Formulas of Yun Qi Zi about the seven exteriors, the eight interiors, and the nine channels with treatment methods), and it was compiled by Zhang Bi. The exact year of its compilation is unknown. The book refers to theories from the ancient works Neijing (The Inner Canon) and Mai Jing (the Pulse Classic), as well as the theory of the Zhongjing's pulse method. It combines these theories with the relevant expositions of later generations, family-inherited pulse theory, and sets the seven exteriors, eight interiors, and nine channels as an outline to discuss main syndromes, treatment methods, and prescriptions for each channel. The author also incorporates his own viewpoints. Later, the book was collected in the series Ji Sheng Ba Cui (The Essence of Succouring Sick).
