Biographical Introduction and Historical Accounts

張璧Zhāng Bì Zhang Bi, also known by his style name Yún Qízǐ, was a Jin-dynasty physician born in Yìzhōu. He was the son of the eminent physician Zhang Yuansu. Though his exact birth and death years remain unknown, he was active during the late 12th and early 13th centuries. He was a master of pulse diagnosis and made significant contributions to the study and interpretation of the Shang Han Lun (The Treatise on Cold-induced Diseases).

Major Works and Academic Contributions

Zhang Bi’s principal work on the Shang Han Lun (the Treatise on Cold-induced Diseases) is the Shang Han Bao Ming Ji (A Life-Saving Compendium on Cold-Induced Diseases, or A Life-Preserving Compendium on Cold-Induced Diseases). His other writings include 《脈談》(Mai Tan, or Discussions on the Pulse) and 《醫學新說》(Yi Xue Xin Shuo, or New Theories of Medicine), among others—both later included in the medical compendium Ji Sheng Ba Cui series (The Essential Collection for Sustaining Life).

The Shang Han Bao Ming Ji (A Life-Saving Compendium on Cold-Induced Diseases) is a two-volume treatise devoted to the Shang Han Lun. It is also known as Yun Qi Zi Bao Ming Ji Lun Lei Yao (Categorized Essentials from Yun Qizi’s Life-Saving Compendium). The work systematically addresses syndromes of cold-induced disease, principal prescriptions, variant formulas, and their indications. It clearly differentiates cold-induced diseases from warm diseases. It introduces acupuncture methods applicable to Shanghan syndromes, discusses miscellaneous syndromes of Shanghan, disease transmission, deteriorating cases, and common miscellaneous internal diseases. Its therapeutic indications are precise, and its selected prescriptions are clinically pragmatic. A dedicated section on pediatric diseases appears at the end. Later, the text was incorporated into the Ji Sheng Ba Cui series (The Essential Collection for Sustaining Life Series).

Yun Qi Zi Mai Jue (The Pulse Formulas of Yun Qizi) is a specialized monograph on pulse diagnosis. Its full title is Yun Qi Zi Qi Biao Ba Li Jiu Dao Mai Jue Lun Bing Zhi Fa (Pulse Formulas of Yun Qizi: On the Seven Exteriors, Eight Interiors, and Nine Channels, with Discussion of Disease and Treatment Methods), compiled by Zhang Bi. Its precise date of compilation is unknown. The text draws upon classical theories from the Neijing (The Inner Canon) and the Mai Jing (the Pulse Classic), as well as Zhang Zhongjing’s pulse methodology. Integrating these foundations with later expositions, hereditary family teachings on pulse, and his own insights, Zhang Bi organizes the work around the conceptual framework of the “seven exteriors, eight interiors, and nine channels,” using it to analyze syndromes, treatment principles, and prescriptions for each channel. The work was subsequently collected in the Ji Sheng Ba Cui series (The Essential Collection for Sustaining Life Series).
