Introduction of the Principle of Treatment.

Principle of Treatment:Introduction Introduction: The principles of TCM treatment are introduced as:

✵Syndrome differentiation:  diagnosis and treatment based on the overall analysis of symptoms and signs, including the causes, nature, and location of the illness and the patient's physical condition, according to traditional Chinese medical theories.

✵Cause determination and treatment:  diagnosis and treatment based on determination of the cause of the illness.

✵Holistic conception:  viewing of the various parts of the human body as an organic whole, closely related to each other and to the external environment.

✵Suited to the person:  a principle of treatment that the patient should be treated in accordance with his or her age, constitution, mental attitude, and lifestyle.

✵Suited to time, place and person:  a comprehensive principle of treatment based on the correspondence between man and the universe that treatment should be determined with an overall consideration of the seasonal, geographical and personal conditions.

✵Different treatment for the same disease:  a therapeutic principle of applying different methods of treatment to the same kind of disease in the light of different physical reactions and clinical manifestations(i.e., different syndromes).

✵Same treatment for different disease:  a therapeutic principle of applying the same method of treatment to patients with different kinds of diseases if they are alike in clinical manifestations and pathogenesis(i.e., with the same syndrome).

✵Treating disease from the root:  the guiding principle of treatment that the fundamental cause of disease should be dealt with.

✵Tip(the incidental):  also known as the incidental, that referring to (1).manifestation of a disease in relation to its cause;(2).pathogenic factor in relation to body resistance,(3).complication or relapse of a disease in relation to its primary onset,(4).disease in the exterior in relation to that in the interior.

✵Root(the fundamental): also known as the fundamental, that referring to (1).cause of a disease in relation to its manifestations,(2).body resistance in relation to pathogenic factors,(3).the primary onset of a disease in relation to its complications,(4).disease in the interior in relation to that in the exterior.

✵Treating the fundamental:  treating the cause of a disease or syndrome.

✵Treating the incidental:  treating the manifestations of a disease or syndrome.

✵Treating the fundamental and the incidental simultaneously: a therapeutic principle applied to cases of severe illness with marked symptoms or complications.

✵Preventive treatment:  (1).prevention of disease,(2).early treatment for prevention of complications.

✵Supporting the healthy and eliminating the evil:  two general principles of treatment- to strengthen the patient's resistance and to dispel the invading pathogenic factors, which can be applied separately or in combination according to the particular condition of the case.

✵Supporting the healthy with eliminating the evil: a principle of treatment that strengthening of healthy Qi is primary and dispelling of the pathogenic factors is auxiliary, indicated for complicated cases of deficiency and excess with the predominance of healthy Qi deficiency.

✵Dispel the evil with support for the healthy: a principle of treatment that elimination of the pathogenic factors is primary and strengthening of healthy Qi is auxiliary, indicated for complicated cases of deficiency and excess with the predominance of the excess of pathogenic factors.

✵Supporting the healthy and strengthening the root:  (1).reinforcing the body resistance and improving the constitution,(2).restoring the normal functioning of the body to improve the constitution.

✵Simultaneous attack and reinforcement:  a principle of treatment with attacking and reinforcing methods used in combination, suitable for patients with a weak constitution suffering from an excess syndrome.

✵Attack followed by reinforcement:  a principle of treatment indicated in cases where, although the healthy Qi is insufficient, excess of pathogenic factors predominates and combined use of reinforcement therapy may aggravate the disease.

✵Reinforcement followed by attack:  a principle of treatment marked by reinforcing first and then attacking, indicated for a debilitated patient who is incapable of withstanding the required attack therapy.

✵Attacking for reinforcing:  one of the therapeutic principles for a complicated case of deficiency and excess that reinforcing therapy is applied for the purpose of eliminating the pathogenic factors.

✵Reinforcing for attacking:  one of the therapeutic principles for a complicated case of deficiency and excess that attacking therapy is applied for purpose of reinforcing healthy Qi.

✵Routine treatment(treatment in the same direction):  also known as a treatment in the same direction, use of medicine opposite in nature to the disease, e.g., treating heat syndrome with medicines cold in nature.

✵Contrary treatment(treatment in the opposite direction):  also known as a treatment in the opposite direction, use of medicines similar in nature to the disease, e.g., treating pseudo-heat syndrome with medicines hot in nature.

✵Use of corrigents:  use of herbs with property opposite to that of the principal ingredient in order to favorably modify the action of the latter which might be too powerful or harsh.

✵Treating Yang for Yin disease: (1).since chronic diseases of cold nature(pertaining to yin) are apt to damage yang, it is necessary to invigorate yang in the treatment,(2).Diseases with symptoms of the yin meridians are often treated by needling the points on the yang meridians,e.g., needling dazhu(BL11) and fengmen(BL12)(points of foot taiyang meridian) to treat cough after catching a cold, a manifestation of pathological changes in the lung meridian of hand taiyin.

✵Treating Yin for Yang disease: (1).A febrile disease(pertaining to yang) is apt to injure Yin(vital essence and fluid) and should be treated with the method of replenishing Yin in protracted cases,(2).diseases with symptoms of the yang meridians may be treated by needling the points of the Yin meridians, e.g., needling neiguan(PC6)(a point of hand jueyin meridian) to treat vomiting, a manifestation of pathological changes in the stomach meridian of foot yangming.

✵Treating the lower for the upper, and treating the upper for the lower: (1).in acupuncture, the points on the lower part of the body are needled when the symptoms appear in the upper part, and vice versa, e.g., needling taichong(LR3) on the foot to treat dizziness, needling baihui(GV20) on the top of the head to treat prolapse of the rectum.(2).in medication, herbs acting on the lower part of the body are often administered while the symptoms appear in the upper part, and vice versa, e.g., using rhubarb to induce catharsis for treating dizziness due to excessive fire, and using herbs to clear up the lung for inducing diuresis.

✵Treating disease of the left with points on the right, and vice versa:  treating disease in one side of the body by needling points on the opposite side.

✵Using cold for cold:  treating pseudo-cold symptoms with herbs cool or cold in property.

✵Using heat for heat:  treating pseudo-heat symptoms with herbs warm or hot in property.

✵Filling for the stuffed:  treating a stuffed condition such as abdominal distension or constipation with tonics if it is caused by insufficient functioning of the spleen.

✵Opening for the opened: an unusual treatment, e.g., purgation in treating diarrhea caused by food stagnation.
