Botanical description: Alisma orientale (Sam.) Juz is also known as A. plantago-aquatica L.var.orientale Sam., a plant of the Alismataceae family (water plantain family) and Alisma genus, it is commonly known as Alisma orientale, Asian water plantain, or Ze Xie. A perennial marsh plant, the plant grows up to 50~100 cm high. Underground tubers are spheric shape (globular), up to 4.5 cm in diameter, bark brown, and many fibrous roots densely grow on them. Leaves are radicicolous; petioles grow up to 50 cm long, the base is extended into the sheath-like (leaf sheath-shaped), 5~20 mm wide; leaf blades are broadly elliptical to oval (egg-shaped), 5~18 cm long, 2~10 cm wide, apex is cuspidate or mucronate (mucronated), base is wide cuneate (wedge-shaped), round or slightly cordate, entire, both surfaces are smooth; 5~7 leaf veins.
Scapes (flower stalks) grow from the tuft of leaves, 10~100 cm long, inflorescences usually ramify in 3~5 whorls, branches have lanceolate or linear bracts, verticillated branches often ramify again, compose conical composite umbel, small pedicels differ in length; bracteoles are lanceolate to linear, pointed; 3 sepals (calyx lobes), broad-ovate, green or slightly purplish, 2~3 mm long, persistent; flower petals are obovate, membranous, smaller than sepals, white, shedding (deciduous); 6 stamens; many pistils, free; the ovary is obovate, flat-sided, style is lateral.
Achenes are many, flat, obovate, 1.5~2 mm long, about 1 mm wide, the back has two shallow grooves, brown, style is persistent. Its flowering period is from June to August, the fruiting period is from July to September.
Ecological environment: The plant grows on the edge of marshes or is cultivated. The plant is distributed in the northern, eastern, southwest, and northwest areas, and other areas of China.
Growth characteristics: The plant Alisma orientale prefers a warm and moist climate, seedlings should be shaded by foliage, adult plant prefers sunshine, afraid of coldness, and can be cultivated in areas at altitudes below 800 meters above sea level.
