Lapis Micae Aureus(Mica-schist).

Mica-schist Pin Yin Name: Jīn Ménɡ Shí.
 English Name: Mica-schist.
 Latin Name: Lapis Micae Aureus.
 Property and flavor: warm, pungent, sweet.

 Brief introduction: The herb Lapis Micae Aureus is a golden-colored mineral mica-schist, usually made into pills or powders to purge phlegm and stop convulsions in the treatment of cough and dyspnea with sticky sputum, epilepsy, and mania. The herb is commonly known as Lapis Micae Aureus, Mica-schist, Jīn Ménɡ Shí.

 Mineral source: Herbal classic book defined the herb Lapis Micae Aureus(Mica-schist) as the schist of:(1). Vermiculite Schist, or (2). Hydrobiotite Schist. These 2 commonly used Schists are introduced:

(1).Vermiculite Schist.

 Description: The vermiculite schist is mainly composed of vermiculite, a scaly mineral. The secondary mineral is hydrobiotite, which contains a small amount of ordinary amphibole and quartz. The scales are small and fine, the fracture surface is lamellar, and microscopically the flakes are oriented arrangement. It is a scale crystalloblastic texture; Lamellar structure. Schist is light, light brown, or pale brown, with a golden luster. The quality is soft, and fragile, the fragments are mainly in squamuliform shape (small scale shape).

 Vermiculite Schist Characters of herbs: The vermiculite schist is mainly an aggregate composed of scaly minerals. Most of them are irregular fragments or granules, 0.1~0.8 cm in diameter. Some are irregular flat blocks or thick clintheriform (thick sheet-shape), 2~10 cm long, 2~5 cm wide, and 0.6~1.5 cm thick. No edges and corners, or layers are visible on the fracture surface. The mineral is pale brown or brownish yellow, with a golden luster. The texture is soft, can be used to write on hard paper, and leave pale brown scratches. It has an earthy fishy smell and a mild taste.

 Medicinal efficacy: Reduce phlegm and descending Qi (sending down abnormally ascending), calm the liver and relieving convulsion. Indicated for obstinate phlegm accumulation, cough and asthma, epilepsy and madness, irritable and choking sensation in the chest, convulsion, and hyperspasmia.

 Administration of Lapis Micae Aureus (Jīn Ménɡ Shí):

TCM Books: ①.Internally:3~6 grams, mostly prepare to pill,powder; ②.Internally: prepare to pill,powder,3~6 grams; or water decoction, 10~15 grams, decoct the herb wrapped.

(2).Hydrobiotite Schist.

 Description: The hydrobiotite schist is a scale morphing structure; a lamellar structure. Schist is yellowish-brown, dark brown, or dark ferrite yellow. Golden or silver luster. The mineral body is light, soft, fragile, and looks like wheat bran after being broken.

 Characters of herbs: It is an irregular block composed of small scaly minerals, yellowish-brown or dark ferrite yellow, with golden yellow or silvery white luster. The herb of better grade is whole, golden, and free of impurities.
