Brief introduction: The herb Semen Sinapis Albae is the ripe seed of Brassica alba(L.) Boiss.(family Cruciferae), used to warm the lung and resolve phlegm for treating a cough with profuse expectoration and stuffy feeling in the chest, and also for treating the cold abscess and pleural fluid retention. The herb is commonly known as Semen Sinapis Albae, White Mustard Seed, Bái Jiè Zǐ.
Botanical source: The herb Semen Sinapis Albae(White Mustard Seed) is the ripe seed of Brassica alba(L.) Boiss., it is a plant of Sinapis L. genus, the Cruciferae family of the Rhoeadales order.

Botanical description: Annual or biennial, 40~120 cm tall. Stem erect, longitudinally branched, upper part much-branched, scattered with white stiff hairs. Leaves alternate. Thin, stipitate; Leaf blade large head at the base of stem lobed or sublobed, broadly elliptic or ovoid, 6~15 cm long, 2~3 cm wide, apex lobes large. Lateral lobes 1~3 pairs, margin sparsely toothed; Cauline leaves smaller, with short stipitate, ascending lobes fewer. Racemes terminal or axillary; 4 small sepals, green, erect, lanceolate or oblong. Base clawed; 4 stamens, 4 long, 2 short, long stamens 8.5~9.5 mm, short stamens 6~6.5 mm. 1 pistil, ovary long columnar, 9~10 mm long, densely covered with white tufts. Sinew cylindric 2~2.5 cm long, densely covered with white stiff bristles, fruit petals constricted between seeds into rosary beads, sinew apex with a flattened sword-shaped beak. Seeds subglobose, yellowish. Its flowering period is from April to June, fruiting from May to July.
Ecological environment: the plant is native to Europe. It also grows in the lower reaches area of the Yangtze River, the northwest, southwest areas of China.
Growth characteristics: Sandy loam with good drainage is preferred.
Characters of herbs: seed nearly spherical, 2~2.5 mm in diameter. The surface is yellowish-white, smooth, under a magnifying glass, with fine reticulations, one end with a round pale brown navel, swollen in water, 2 thick cotyledons, oily, folded longitudinally, radicle enveloping. Smells light, spicy taste, crushed wet, there is a special spicy and strong odor. It is better to have large, full, yellow, white and pure grain.
Pharmacological actions: ①.antibacterial effect:The benzyl isothiocyanate contained in the Semen Sinapis Albae has a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect on yeast, 20 kinds of fungi, and dozens of other strains. The effective antibacterial concentration against gram-negative or gram-positive bacteria is 1:10(2)-3×10(2). The aqueous extract of white mustard seed has a different degree of antifungal effect to Achorion violaceum and Achorion schoenleinii in a test tube. Sialbin hydrolyzes to produce glucosinolates which also have bactericidal action; ②.stimulation effect; ③.anti-lipid peroxidation, expectorant, regulating blood pressure effect.
Medicinal efficacy: Benefit Qi and reduce phlegm, warm the middle and dissipate cold, free channel and analgesia, indicated for the treatment of cold phlegm and asthma cough, chest fullness and pain in hypochondria, phlegm stagnation meridians, joint numbness, etc.
