Major Works and Academic Contributions

Yun Yu Xuan Ji (The Profound Mechanisms of Conception and Gestation) is Tao Benxue’s seminal gynecological treatise, comprising three volumes. Volume 1 addresses menstrual regulation, pulse diagnosis, and the treatment—including prescriptions—of common menstrual disorders. Volume 2 covers miscarriage prevention, theoretical foundations of conception and pregnancy, principles of pulse diagnosis in obstetrics, etiology and pathogenesis of infertility, and differential diagnosis and management of common gestational diseases (pregnancy diseases). Volume 3 focuses on differential diagnosis and treatment of labor-related and postpartum conditions. The book contains 127 entries (articles), offering comprehensive, clinically grounded discussions on the diagnosis and treatment of frequently encountered obstetric and gynecologic conditions. Its exposition is concise and direct; it presents novel interpretations of classical medical theory, accurate syndrome differentiation, well-reasoned therapeutic methods with corresponding prescriptions, and illustrative case reports—all contributing to its enduring practical value.

Tao Benxue observed that although numerous gynecological texts and women's department existed, effective clinical methodologies for obstetric disorders remained insufficient. Consequently, he conducted extensive research into ancient medical literature and systematically collated knowledge from classical sources. Drawing particularly upon the theories of Song-dynasty physician Chen Ziming and Ming-dynasty scholar-physician Xue Ji—as well as other schools—he integrated their insights with his own clinical experience derived from successful case treatments. Through rigorous analysis of pregnancy- and childbirth-related pathologies, he advanced original perspectives on diagnosis, treatment, and physiological theory. His scholarship is firmly rooted in the classical canon of traditional Chinese medicine, synthesizes diverse medical traditions, and is fundamentally practice-oriented—demonstrating innovative thinking across both gynecological theory and clinical application.
