Cough.
✵Cough: is commonly defined as sudden noisy expulsion of air from the lung, resulting from the failure of lung Qi in descending, abnormal ascending or rushing up of lung Qi or phlegm in the air passage.
✵ The cough, is a protective reaction of the lung system in the pathogenic attack in daily life. A common cough, are known in various types which caused mainly by various exogenous pathogens and internal pathogens. A common cough, are classified and known as Wind-cold Cough, Wind-heat Cough, Visiting cold with heat Cough, Cold-Dampness Cough, Wind-Dryness-Qi Cough, Fluid-retention Cough, Phlegm-damp Cough, Liver-Fire Cough, Lung-insufficiency Cough, Lung-Abscess Cough, etc.
✦ In the TCM system, the pathogenic reasons of a cough are known from various origins, from wind cold, from wind heat, from dryness, from phlegm, from liver depression, from dyspepsia or indigestion. Thus, different methods are developed according to syndrome differentiation and different pathogenic reasons. Besides, there are also reasons from other syndromes which caused a cough, the point is to treat other diseases, once it cured a cough will go naturally.
✧ The common symptoms of coughs, are known including sudden noisy expulsion of air from the lung, with an explosive noise but no expectoration, or the expectoration of sputum without an explosive noise.
Wind-cold Cough.
✵The Wind-cold Cough mainly caused by wind and cold, the common symptoms are known including: cough noise sound heavy turbidity, Phlegm clearing and thinning, absence of thirst(not thirsty), tongue color pink-red, thin white tongue coating and moist coating on tongue, turned serious when caught cold, relieved in warm circumstance. Other possible symptoms are also known including frothy expectoration, stuffed--up nose, chills or aversion to cold, general aching and no sweating. This is the case of Wind-cold Cough which caused by wind and cold.
Wind-heat Cough.
✵The Wind-heat Cough mainly caused by wind and heat, the common symptoms are known including cough noise sound not high, phlegm color yellow and thick, dry mouth and thirst, tongue color red, thin yellow tongue coating, fever, fear heat. Other possible symptoms are also known including sticky expectoration, fever, thirst, and sore throat. This is the case of Wind-heat Cough which caused by wind and heat.
Visiting cold with heat Cough.
✵The Visiting cold with heat Cough mainly caused by visiting cold exogenous pathogen and internal heat pathogen, the common symptoms are known including:cough sounds like frog in the throat, ranting or rough breathing similar as asthma, fear cold, clear nasal discharge, thirsty and sore throat, thick phlegm hard to spit out, tongue color dark red, white tongue coating and moist coating on tongue, heat accumulated inside in normal life.
Cold-Dampness Cough.
✵The Cold-Dampness Cough mainly caused by dampness and cold pathogens, the common symptoms are known including: cough sounding dump and dull, much phlegm, thoracic and epigastric distension, white tongue coating and moist coating on the tongue, most cases observed from those with obesity.
Wind-Dryness-Qi Cough.
✵The Wind-Dryness-Qi Cough mainly caused by wind and dryness or dryness Qi pathogens, the common symptoms are known including: a cough sounding clear and crisp(ringing), less phlegm or no phlegm, or phlegm looks like silk and hardly to expectorated out, or a dry cough without phlegm, thoracic pain in severe cough conditions, dry mouth and dry nose, dry tongue coating and short of body fluid.
Fluid-retention Cough.
✵The Fluid-retention Cough is mainly caused by fluid retention pathogen, the common symptoms are known including: a cough with Qi counterflow(reverse flow of Qi), panting or gasping for breath and could not laying flat, chronic and could not recover in a long period, attack in winter or when cold, much phlegm and white in color, normally with foam and bubbles, normally accompany puffy swollen face and eyes, chest and hypochondriac retention, white tongue coating and moist coating on tongue. This disease is normally identified as chronic bronchitis(a winter cough) in other science.
Phlegm-damp Cough.
✵The Phlegm-damp Cough is mainly caused by phlegm and dampness pathogen, accumulation of phlegm-damp in the lung, the common symptoms are known including a cough sounding dull and dump, much phlegm and thick phlegm and easy to expectorate, thoracic and epigastric distension, white turbid tongue coating and moist coating on the tongue. Other symptoms including copious expectoration, relieved when phlegm is discharged.
Liver-Fire Cough.
✵The Liver-Fire Cough is mainly caused by the accumulation of heat and fire in the liver, the common symptoms are known including: a cough with Qi counterflow(reverse flow of Qi), lateral thorax pain when a cough, anxiety and irritable(mood agitated), angers easily(easy to get angry), and the cough will turn severe when angry.
Lung-insufficiency Cough.
✵The Lung-insufficiency Cough is mainly caused by Lung-insufficiency. The Lung-insufficiency is mainly due to Qi-deficiency of the lung and spleen, or the Yin-deficiency of the lung and stomach, the pulmonary lobe(lung lobe) weak and could not work well, which belongs to asthenia or deficiency syndromes. The common symptoms are known including a cough sounding low and not high, expectorate turbid phlegm or bubbles. Other symptoms may also be observed including a dry cough or blood-stained sputum, emaciation, fidgetiness, insomnia, night sweats, malar flush and afternoon fever. There are two basic types observed:
✦Qi-deficiency of the lung and spleen:symptoms including cough and expectorate bubbles phlegm, clear thin and much in volume, mental fatigue, fatigue and laziness, poor appetite and low food intake, dizziness and short of breath, fear of cold and like warm, diuresis, pale tongue and tender tongue.
✧ Yin-deficiency of the lung and stomach: symptoms including cough and expectorate turbid bubbles phlegm, thick and sticky, gasping and panting, emaciation, dry mouth, and dry throat, thin and dry tongue.
Lung-Abscess Cough.
✵The Lung-Abscess Cough is mainly caused by lung-abscess. The lung-abscess is a kind of abscess formed by the accumulation of exogenous wind-heat or endogenous heat which attack the lung and formed the abscess. In other science, it is normally identified as "Pulmonary abscess".The main observed symptoms of the Lung-Abscess cough are including chest pain with a cough, painful as tearing, so dare not cough with a high voice, touch chest when a cough, difficulty in the breath, thick phlegm, stinking smell as of rotten fish, with blood or pus. It could be classified into three types according to different stages of the Lung-Abscess.
✦Early stage of the Lung-Abscess: the main observed symptoms are including cough, chest pain, severe cough lead to severe pain, difficulty in a breath, less phlegm and sticky, dry mouth, fever, shivered and fear of cold, yellow tongue coating and thin.
✧Carbuncle stage of the Lung-Abscess:the main observed symptoms are including: a cough, Qi counterflow(reverse flow of Qi), panting and fullness, choking sensation in chest and chest pain, unable to move around, spitting purulent sputum, stinking smell as of rotten fish, heavily fever, shivered frequently. Later, only fever, not fear of cold, dry mouth and dry throat but not want to drink, anxiety and dysphoria(fidget and restlessness), fever on the chest and scalding, scaly dry skin(squamous and dry skin), yellow tongue coating and moist coating on the tongue.
✦Abscess or Ulcerous stage of the Lung-Abscess:the main observed symptoms are including:cough and spitting pus and blood, or spitting as rice porridge, special stinking smell as of rotten fish, milder chest pain than previous stage, fever and thirsty and like to drink water, yellow tongue coating and moist coating on tongue.
