✵Cough, Retained fluid, Yellowish sweating, Li-Jie disease: Cough:strictly speaking, the two Chinese characters have different meanings. Ke means the expelling of air from the lungs suddenly with an explosive noise but no expectoration, while Sou refers to the expectoration of sputum without an explosive noise. Generally, the two Chinese characters are used together to denote cough, regardless of noise or expectoration. The phlegm-fluid retention is (1).a general term for retention of phlegm and fluid in any part of the body; or (2).a particular designation for retention of fluid in the gastrointestinal tract, e.g., gastric retention in pyloric stenosis. The Yellow sweating, or yellow-colored sweat associated with bitterness and stickiness in the mouth, thirst but no desire to drink, yellow and greasy tongue coating, ascribed to the interior accumulation of damp-heat.The Li-Jie or arthritis is a swollen painful joint with limitation in motion, including acute rheumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.
✵Herbalist Zhang Zhongjing discused the Cough in about 25 entries, discused the Retained fluid in about 39 entries, discused the Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating) in about 2 entries, discused the Li-Jie disease in about 11 entries. These syndromes are all discused in details by his famous works.
Cough.
[entry-01]. Master: the cough outbreaks from the lung, but not only belong to the lung disease, but the guest pathogens invading five Zang-viscera and six Fu-viscera all can lead to cough. For these reasons, pathogen Qi (pathogenic factors) counterflows upward, surely affecting the lung, the lung was moved by Qi, sounding like a cough. To know the pathogenic reasons, surely one needs to take pulse manifestation and breath conditions. Record in entries for you, and you could pass it on to wise man of later generations.
[entry-02]. Lung cough (pulmonary cough, cough chiefly caused by the lung disease), the pulse is short and choppy. If the pulse is floating, short and choppy, knows it is wind pathogen affection; the pulse is tense, short and choppy, knows it is cold pathogen affection; the pulse is rapid, short and choppy, knows it is heat pathogen affection; the pulse is swift, short and choppy, knows it is dryness pathogen affection; the pulse is soggy, short and choppy, knows it is dampness pathogen affection. These are the pathogenic reasons for lung cough. Its symptoms are known as panting with sound, or spitting blood in severe cases.
[entry-03]. Heart cough (cough involving the heart), the pulse is large and scattered. If the pulse is floating, large and scattered, knows it is wind pathogen affection; if the pulse is tense, large and scattered, knows it is cold pathogen affection; if the pulse is rapid, large and scattered, knows it is the heat pathogen affection; if the pulse is swift, large and scattered, knows it is dryness pathogen affection; if the pulse is soft, large and scattered, knows it is dampness pathogen affection. These are the pathogenic reasons for heart cough. Its symptoms are cardiodynia (heartache), choking in the throat as there is an obstruction in the throat, and, in severe cases, swelling in the throat and pharyngitis (throat impediment).
[entry-04]. Liver cough (cough due to the disorder of the liver channel), the pulse is wiry and choppy. If the pulse is wiry, floating and choppy, knows it is wind pathogen affection; the pulse is wiry, tense and choppy, knows it is cold pathogen affection; the pulse is wiry, rapid and choppy, knows it is the heat pathogen affection; if the pulse is swift and choppy, knows it is dryness pathogen affection; if the pulse is wiry, soggy and choppy, knows it is dampness pathogen affection. These are the pathogenic reasons for liver cough. Its symptoms are known as hypochondriac pain, in severe conditions one is unable to turn around, and hypochondriac fullness if one turns around.
[entry-05]. Spleen cough (cough related to the spleen channel), the pulse is soggy and choppy. If the pulse is floating, soggy and choppy, knows it is wind pathogen affection; if the pulse is sunken, soggy and choppy, knows it is cold pathogen affection; if the pulse is rapid, soggy and choppy, knows it is the heat pathogen affection; if the pulse is slow, soggy and choppy, knows it is dampness pathogen affection. These are the pathogenic reasons for spleen cough. Its symptoms are known as right hypochondrium pain, dragging pain spread to the back, in a severe case one cannot move, if one moves then one will cough violently.
[entry-06]. Kidney cough (renal cough), the pulse is sunken and soggy. If the pulse is sunken, wiry and soggy, knows it is wind pathogen affection; if the pulse is sunken, tense and soggy, knows it is cold pathogen affection; if the pulse is sunken, rapid and soggy, knows it is the heat pathogen affection; if the pulse is sunken, swift and soggy, knows it is dryness pathogen affection; if the pulse is sunken, tardus and soggy, knows it is dampness pathogen affection. These are the pathogenic reasons for kidney cough. Its symptoms are known as shoulder-back protraction pain, in severe cases one coughs with saliva.
[entry-07]. The lung cough is incessant (not relieved), then it transmits to the large intestine, the pulse is the same as the lung cough, and its symptoms are known as cough and involuntary defecation.
[entry-08]. The heart cough is incessant (not relieved), then it transmits to the small intestine, the pulse is the same as the heart cough, its symptoms are known as cough and loss Qi, Qi and cough are both lost.
[entry-09]. The liver cough is incessant (not relieved), and then it transmits to the gallbladder, the pulse is the same as the liver cough, and its symptoms are vomiting bitter liquid.
[entry-10]. The spleen cough is incessant (not relieved), then it transmits to the stomach, the pulse is the same as the spleen, and its symptoms are known as vomiting, throwing up ascarid in severe vomiting.
[entry-11]. The kidney cough is incessant (not relieved), then it transmits to the urinary bladder, the pulse is the same as the kidney, and its symptoms are known as cough and enuresis (urinary incontinence).
[entry-12]. Chronic cough is incessant (not relieved), then it transmits to the triple energizer, the pulse varies with the syndromes, its symptoms are known as cough and abdominal distention (fullness in the abdomen), no appetite (do not want to take food).
[entry-13]. Cough and retained fluid, cough and unable to sleep, dyspnea (rapid breathing, shortness of breath) if lying down and sleeping, this is the case of excess syndrome; Cough and unable talk, talk and shortness of breath, this is known as deficiency syndrome. Cough disease varies, and the treatment method varies. Follow its principles cautiously, might get a positive result in various cases.

[entry-01]. Asked: what is the retained fluid disease?
Master: there are four types of retained fluid, they are known as Tán Yǐn (phlegm-fluid retention), Xuán Yǐn (pleural fluid retention), Yì Yǐn (subcutaneous fluid retention), Zhī Yǐn (thoracic fluid retention). The person is fat in the past but emaciated now, and water flows in the intestines, sonance, is the syndrome Tán Yǐn (phlegm-fluid retention); water flows downward below the costal region, coughing and spitting leads to dragging pain, is the syndrome Xuán Yǐn (pleural fluid retention); water flows into the limbs (legs and feet, arms and hands), perspiration should be induced but not applied, bodily ache and somatic heaviness (ache and heaviness of the body), is the syndrome Yì Yǐn (subcutaneous fluid retention); waters stay below the diaphragm region, cough, and counterflow with propped breathing, shortness of breath and could not sleep, the shape looks like swelling, is the syndrome Zhī Yǐn (thoracic fluid retention).
[entry-02]. Water is in the heart, hardness below the heart, short of breath, sick of water and do not want to drink; water is in the lung, one surely will spit saliva, and wants to drink water; water is in the spleen, short of breath and somatic heaviness (heaviness of the body); water is in the liver, hypochondriac fullness, sneeze and hypochondriac pain; water is in the kidney, then palpitation is observed.
[entry-03]. There is fluid retention (prolonged edema) retaining below the heart, surely cold on the back and its size is as big as a palm, cough and pain under the costal region dragging pain to the supraclavicular fossa (Quē Pén).
[entry-04]. There is fluid retention (prolonged edema) retaining in the chest, surely one is short of breath and thirst, and pain in joints and limbs.
[entry-05]. Healthy person, appetite is poor and drinks much, water retaining under the heart (in the epigastrium), develops to disease over a long period. In a severe condition, there is palpitation, in a mild case there is shortness of breath. If the pulse is wiry (stringlike) at both sides, it is the cold syndrome, if the pulse is wiry (stringlike) at one side, it is Yǐn (fluid retention).
[entry-06]. If one is short of breath, there is Wēi Yǐn (mild fluid retention), should be treated and dispel it from urination.

[entry-19]. Master: there are syndromes Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema), Pí Shuǐ (skin edema), Zhèng Shuǐ (typical anasarca, anasarca with shortness of breath), Shí Shuǐ (stony edema), Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating).
[entry-20]. Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema), the pulse is floating itself, symptoms joint pain (pain in condyle), aversion to wind.
. Pí Shuǐ (skin edema), the pulse is also floating, symptoms swelling in the abdomen, finger sunken when pressed down, no aversion to wind, the abdomen is similar to a drum, not thirst, perspiration should be induced.
. Zhèng Shuǐ (typical anasarca, anasarca with shortness of breath), the pulse is sunken and slow, symptoms panting.
. Shí Shuǐ (stony edema), the pulse is sunken itself, and symptoms include abdominal distention (fullness in the abdomen) and not panting, urination should be induced.
. Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating), the pulse is sunken and slow, symptoms fever, fullness sensation in the chest, swelling of face and extremities (swelling of the head, face, arms and hands, legs and feet), not relieved in a long period, surely develops to carbuncles with pus.
[entry-21]. The pulse is floating and surging (bounding), floating is the syndrome of wind, and surging is the syndrome of Qi. Wind and Qi pathogens combining, wind is strong, and the syndrome is known as Yǐn Zhěn (urticaria), itching on the body, itching is the syndrome Xiè Fēng (anemogenic sweating, itching tetter), it develops to Jiā Lài (scab and favus) in a long period; Qi is strong, and the syndrome is fluid retention, difficult to lay or bend, bodily full swelling (full swelling in body), perspiration is applied, and it will get relieved. If one is aversion to wind, it is deficiency syndrome, this is the syndrome Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema); If one is not aversion to wind, uninhibited urination (urination is smooth), there is a cold pathogen in the upper energizer, much saliva in the mouth, this is the syndrome Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating).
[entry-22]. The cunkou pulse is sunken and slippery, there is internal water pathogen (edema), swelling and enlarge face and eyes, there is fever or heat, it is known as Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema). There is mild swelling on the superior orbit, looks like just waking up, the pulse on the neck moves, cough at times (now and then), press on the hands and feet, sunken and not bounced back, it is also known as Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema).
[entry-23]. Taiyang disease, the pulse is floating and tense, should observe pain in joints (ache and pain in condyle), contrary (to expectations), now there is no pain, somatic heaviness and sore pain, not thirst, this is Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema), perspiration is induced, and it will get relieved; If one is aversion to cold, it is an extreme deficiency, catch this syndrome is because perspiration was induced. Thirst and is not aversion to cold, it is known as Pí Shuǐ (skin edema). The body is swelling and cold, symptoms observed are similar to a Zhōu Bì (generalized impediment, general arthralgia), stuffiness in the chest (chest obstruction), no appetite (cannot take food), contrary (to expectations), accumulated pain, vexed and insomnia (could not sleep), this is Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating). Pain in the joints (pain in condyle), cough and panting, not thirst, this is Zhèng Shuǐ (typical anasarca), symptoms are similar to swelling, perspiration is induced and it will get relieved. Though suffers from this syndrome, if there is thirst and diarrhea, frequent urination, and perspiration should not be induced, and should prompt urination (prompt diuresis).
[entry-24]. The disease of heart edema (water retention in the heart), symptoms are somatic heaviness (heavy body) and shortness of breath, insomnia (could not sleep), dysphoria (fidget, irritation), and swelling of the genital area.
[entry-25]. The disease of liver edema (water retention in the liver), symptoms are enlarged abdomen (abdominal enlargement), could not change one's position (could not turn around), hypochondriac pain, slight generation of body fluids, and free urine continuously.
[entry-26]. The disease of lung edema (water retention in the lung), symptoms are body swelling, dysuria (difficulty in urination), pass duck stool (diarrhea, clear and dilute as water, as the duck shit) at times (now and then).
[entry-27]. The disease of spleen edema (water retention in the spleen), symptoms are an enlarged abdomen (abdominal enlargement), soreness and heaviness of limbs (sore and heavy of hands arms and feet legs), body fluids is unable to be produced, suffering from shortness of breath, dysuria (difficulty in urination).
[entry-28]. The disease of kidney edema (water retention in the kidney), symptoms are enlarged abdomen (abdominal enlargement), swelling of the umbilicus (bellybutton), low back pain, can't urinate (difficulty in urination and could not urinate), genital dampness (wet and damp under the genital area) and it is similar to sweating on ox nose, counterflow cold in feet, contrary (to expectations), the face is thin.
[entry-29]. For cases of water retention or edema, swelling below the waist, should prompt diuresis; If there is swelling above the waist, perspiration should be induced, then it will get relieved.
[entry-30]. The cunkou pulse is sunken and slow, the pulse is sunken, and it is water retention (edema), the pulse is slow and it is a cold pathogen. Pathogens cold and damp combat each other, the decline of Spleen-Qi and leading to duck stool (diarrhea, clear and dilute as water, as the duck shit), the decline of stomach-Qi and lead to body swelling, known as Shuǐ Fèn (water system).
[entry-31]. The Shaoyang pulse is bēi (sunken and weak), the Shaoyin pulse is thready (thin or fine), man suffers from inhibited urination (difficult urination, difficulty in micturition), woman suffers from inhibited menstrual flow (difficult menstruation), it is known as Xuě Fèn (blood system).
[entry-32]. Woman menstruation, menopause (amenorrhea) at the early stage and water retention at a later stage, is known as Xuě Fèn (blood system), this disease is difficult to treat (obstinate); water retention (edema) at the early stage and menopause (amenorrhea) at a later stage, it is known as Shuǐ Fèn (water system), this disease is not difficult to treat, once the water retention is gone, the menstruation will get recovered.
[entry-33]. The cunkou pulse is sunken and rapid, rapid (pulse) is outering, sunken (pulse) is entering, outering is the Yang excess (Yáng Shí), entering is the Yin binding (Yīn Jié, cold constipation); The Fuyang pulse is weak and wiry (stringlike), weak then there is no stomach-Qi, wiry (stringlike) then inability to catch the breath. The shaoyin pulse is sunken and slippery, the sunken pulse is in the interior, the slippery pulse is the excess, sunken and slippery combating each other, blood binding at the orifice of the uterine cervix, its concretions (obstruction in the intestine) could not get discharged, channels and collaterals are not free, it is known as Xuě Fèn (blood system).
[entry-34]. Asked: one is suffering from water (water retention), swelling on face eyes and body, swelling of limbs (swelling in arms and legs, hands and feet) too, inhibited urination (difficult urination), taking the pulse, not talking about water, contrary (to expectations), self-declare pain in the chest, counterflow upward of Qi to the pharynx, symptoms are like roasted meat, should slightly cough and panting (mild cough and panting), judged, and it is same as Master's conclusion, which category of its pulse manifestation? Master:the cunkou pulse is sunken and tense (tight), the sunken pulse is water (retention, edema), tense is cold, sunken and tense combining with each other, binding at the GuanYuan. It was mild at the initial stage, not observed in prime years (prime age). Since the year Yang declines, the Rong and Wei disturb each other (disturbance between nutrient Qi and defensive Qi), Yang is hurt (turns deficient) and Yin turns excessive, binding cold slightly moves, kidney Qi counterflows upward, choking in the throat, hypochondriac acute pain, herbalist diagnosed it as Liú Yǐn (prolonged edema) and profuse purgation was induced, the pulse is sunken and tense are still same, the disease can not get relieved; used heavy emetic method again, deficiency and vexation of the Wèi Jiā (stomach and intestines), dryness in the throat and wants to drink water, inhibited urination (difficult urination), water and food could not be digested (dyspepsia, non-transformation of grain and water), edema of face eyes hands and feet; was given TingLi to prompt diuresis, and gets recovered a little at the time, overeat and drink (immoderate eating and drinking), edema and swelling again as previous state, pain in the chest and hypochondrium region and is suffering, symptoms looks like Bēn Tún (running piglet, renal mass), the water pathogen counterflow upward, result cough wheezing inversely. Should attack the Stomach-Qi and let it relieved, then treat the cough, once the cough gets relieved, panting or wheezing will get relieved itself. Should treat the new syndrome, and edema should be treated later.
[entry-35]. The disease of edema (water retention), the pulse is sunken and small, it belongs to Shaoyin, it is Shí Shuǐ (stony edema); the pulse is sunken and slow, it belongs to Shaoyin, it is Zhèng Shuǐ (typical anasarca); the pulse is floating and aversion to wind, it is Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema), it belongs to Taiyang; the pulse is floating and one is not aversion to wind, it is Pí Shuǐ (skin edema), it belongs to Taiyang. Yellowish sweating.Li-jie disease.
[entry-01]. Asked: The disease of Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating), swelling of the body as somatic heaviness (heavy body), perspiration and fever, thirst, symptoms are as Fēng Shuǐ (wind edema), sweating on clothes, the color (of sweat) is yellow as a liquid of Cortex Phellodendri, the pulse is sunken itself, where does it be caught? Master: for the reasons of sweating and taking a bath in water, water enters through the sweat pores, ...
[entry-02]. Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating), coldness in two shanks. If there is a fever, this belongs to Li-jie. Sweating after taking food, night sweat at sunset (evening), is the heat of Rong Qi (Ying Qi, nutrient Qi). If already perspired, contrary (to expectations), fever, in a long period surely squamous and dry skin on the body; If the fever is not relieved (incessant), bad sores (malignant sores) will grow out over a long period; If there is somatic heaviness (heavy body), perspiration is induced yet and (body) turns light, in a long period surely muscle is twitching, muscle twitching and pain in the chest. In some cases there is sweating above the waist, no sweating below the waist, spreading pain in the waist and coxa (waist and hip), as if there is something in the skin, could not take food in a severe case, bodily aches and heaviness (somatic heaviness, body ache), dysphoria (fidget), inhibited urination (difficult urination), this is Huáng Hàn (yellowish sweating), ...
[entry-03]. The cunkou pulse is sunken and weak, sunken is for the bone, weak is for the muscle and tendon, sunken is for the kidney, weak is for the liver, sweating and enters into water, if water hurts the heart, Lì Jié Tòng (pain in joints), yellowing sweating, thus it is known as Li Jie.
[entry-04]. Take food of sour taste and then hurts the muscle and tendon, muscle and tendon are hurt then slow down, it is known as Xiè (diarrhea); (take food of) salty taste and then hurts the bone, bone is hurt then leads to Wěi (atrophy), it is known as Kū (withered). The Kū and Xiè combing with each other, it is known as Duàn Xiè (stopped discharge). The Rong Qi (Ying Qi, nutrient Qi) is blocked, the Wei (Wei Qi, defensive Qi) does not circulate separately, the Rong and Wei both turn weak (the nutritive Qi and defensive Qi are both weak), the triple energizers lose the defense, the Sì Shǔ (four limbs, four extremities) are stopped, the body turns thin and weak (emaciated), only the feet are swelling and enlarged, yellow sweating, heat in the two shanks, so it develops to the syndrome Li Jie.
[entry-05]. The Shaoyin pulse is floating and weak, weak and blood is insufficient, floating and it is wind, wind and blood combating with each other, ache and pain as dragging pain.
[entry-06]. Fat person, the pulse is choppy and small, short of breath, perspiring spontaneously, Li Jie pain, could not bend and stretch, this is for the reasons sweating after drink wine and met wind blowing.

[entry-10]. Master: the cunkou pulse is slow and choppy (uneven), slow is the cold pathogen, choppy is blood insufficiency; the Fuyang pulse is weak and slow, weak is for Qi, slow is for the cold pathogen (pathogenic cold). The Stomach Qi is insufficient, then counterflow cold of hands and feet; Rong Qi and Wei Qi (the nutrient Qi and defensive Qi) are inhibited, then abdominal distention (fullness in abdomen) and bowel sounds follow each other, Qi transfers to the urinary bladder, exhaustion of both Ying and Wei (the Ying system and Wei system are both exhausted). The Yang Qi is blocked and as a result coldness of the body, the Yin Qi is not free and as a result ache in bone. The Yang Qi turns free in the front then aversion to cold, the Yin Qi turns free in the front then numb. Yin and Yang supporting each other, then the Qi starts to circulate. The vital Qi starts its circulating, then the cold pathogen (pathogenic cold) starts to disappear. In excess case Qi is losing, in case of deficiency and enuresis (urinary incontinence), known as Qì Fèn (Qi system).
