This study shows that children under the age of five are most prone to kiwifruit allergy. Of the 300 respondents, 80 were children, of whom 2/3 had adverse reactions when eating kiwi fruit for the first time. Two 4-month-old babies and one 1-year-old baby responded too strongly and had to be hospitalized. Adverse reactions of children to kiwifruit include itching of mouth and throat and tongue swelling. Forty-one of the respondents, 40% of whom were under 5 years old, had severe symptoms of dyspnea and collapse after eating kiwi fruit. However, no deaths caused by kiwifruit consumption have been reported.
