mineral blocks of Pyritum Pin Yin Name: Zì Rán Tónɡ.
 English Name: Pyrite.
 Latin Name: Pyritum.
Property and flavor: neutral in nature, pungent.

Brief introduction: The herb Pyritum is a brassy yellow mineral, iron disulfide (iron disulphide), cube-like crystals, used for promoting the healing of fractures and relieving traumatic pain. The herb is commonly known as Pyritum, Pyrite, Zì Rán Tónɡ.

Mineral source: Herbal classic book defined the herb Pyritum (Pyrite) as the common pyrite of natural iron sulfide. This commonly used mineral is introduced as:

Common pyrite of natural iron sulfide: The crystalline structure of iron pyrites (sulfite ore) is an Equiaxed system. The crystal has various shapes, such as cube, octahedron, and pentagonal dodecahedron, and in its polymorphic form, also has a grape shape, granule shape, stalactitic shape, and dense block shape. The crystal surface is streaked. The color is light bronze. The stripes are brown-black or greenish-black. The mineral has a strong metallic luster. The solution is an incomplete cube. The broken blocks are shapeless, sometimes shell-shaped. Its hardness is 6–6.5, crisp. Its relative density is 4.9–5.2.

Distribution: the mineral is distributed widely and can be formed in a variety of geological conditions. The mineral iron pyrites (sulfite ore) is one of the most widely distributed sulfuret in the Earth's crust, it is visible in various rocks and ores but is mostly formed from volcanic sediment and volcanic hydrothermal processes. Iron pyrites (sulfite ore) of exodiagenesis are often visible in stratified rock, sedimentary ore, and coal beds, iron pyrites (sulfite ore) formed here are mostly compacting and blocky, or concretion forms.

brownish mineral blocks of pyrite Characters of herbs: The herb is mostly hexagonal or cubic, with a particle diameter of 0.2–2.5 cm, has ridges, and is bright pale yellow. Stripes are greenish-black or brownish-red. The surface is smooth, and sometimes the fine veins are visible. It is nontransparent, with a metallic luster. The herb is heavy; the texture of the herb is firm, hard, and crisp; it is easy to smash; the broken surface is yellow and white and has a metallic luster. It is odorless and tasteless, but it burns with sulfur gas. The herb of a better grade is in neat blocks, yellow and bright, and the fracture surface has a metallic luster. Some pyrite becomes limonite after weathering and airslake (wind abrasion), which is tawny (yellow-brown) or black-brown. The broken blocks are still black-brown; sometimes there are pale yellow blocks (sulfite ore) mingled inside.

Pharmacological actions: ①.effect on fracture healing, ②.antifungal ability.

Medicinal efficacy: Eliminating stasis to activate blood circulation, relieve pain, support tendon and set a broken bone. It is indicated for traumatic injury, injury of tendon and muscle, breaking of muscle and tendon (laceration of muscle and tendon), stagnation swelling and aching pain, blood stasis and pain, stagnation stasis and swelling pain, accumulation, galls, sore and ulcer, scald (empyrosis), etc.
