 Brief introduction: The herb Rhizoma Cibotii is the dried rhizome of Cibotum barometz(L.) J.Sm., used to tonify the liver and kidney, strengthen the back and knees and dispel wind-damp, for the treatment of insecurity of the kidney and enuresis and leukorrhagia, aching back and knees, rheumatic pain in the back, and strained lumbar muscles. The herb is commonly known as Rhizoma Cibotii, Cibot Rhizome, Gǒu Jǐ.

 Botanical source: Herbal classic book defined the herb Rhizoma Cibotii(Cibot Rhizome) as the dried rhizome of the species (1).Cibotum barometz(L.) J.Sm. It is a plant of the Cibotium genus, the Dicksoniaceae family (tree fern family) of the Cyatheales order. This commonly used species is introduced:

 Cibotum barometz L.J.Sm.:drawing of plant parts Botanical description: The plant is commonly known as Jīn Máo Gǒu Jǐ. Rhizome decumbent, thick, a tuft of large leaves is produced at the top, the stalk is 120 cm long, the thickness is about 2~3 cm, brown, the base is covered with a tuft of cushion shape golden fuzz, more than 10 cm long, glossy, the upper part is smooth; Leaf blade is large, up to 180 cm long, about equal in width, broadly ovate-triangular, tricyclic pinnate division; Lower barbs are oblong, up to 80 cm long, 20-30 cm wide, stalked (3~4 cm long), alternate, distant; Primary barbs are ca. 15 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, alternate, spreading, proximate, petiole (2~3 mm long), linear-lanceolate, long acuminate, base is rounded truncate, feather is deeply lobed to nearly rachis. The final loop segment is linear slightly shows the sickle shape, 1~1.4 cm long, 3 mm wide, pointed, spreading, upside is oblique, margin has shallow serrate, more pointed toward the apex, midvein protruding on both sides, lateral vein protruding on both sides, oblique, simple, but on sterile feather piece cent is binary.

 Cibotum barometz L.J.Sm.:growing plant Leaf-blade is leathery or thick paper, after dry the upper part is brown, shiny, the lower part is gray or gray-blue, both sides are smooth, or the upper and lower sides of small feather shaft is slightly short brown hair sparsely; Sporangium in each final gyrus can produce 1~5 pairs of lobes, grows at the tip of the lower small veins, the sporangium cover is hard, brown, transversely oblong, bivalve shape, the inner valve is smaller than the outer valve, when mature open like a clamshell, showing sporangium; Spores are triangular-tetrahedral, transparent. The root has golden hair on the outside, like the back of a dog.

 Ecological Environment: The plant Cibotum barometz is native to tropical and subtropical areas, it is also distributed in east, south, and southwest areas of China.

 Growth characteristics: The plant Cibotum barometz prefers a warm, moist and shaded environment, fears the cold. Avoid direct light irradiation. Air humidity should be maintained at 70%~80%. The suitable temperature for growth is 16~22 °C (Celsius, or 60.8~71.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Soil requirement is not strict but it grows well in rich, well-drained acid soil.

 Cibotum barometz L.J.Sm.:growing plant Characters of herbs: The rhizome is an irregular long block, with a length of 10~30 cm and a diameter of 2~10 cm. The surface is dark brown, densely covered with bright golden fuzz, with several brown-red petiole residues on the upper part, and many brown-black fine roots on the lower part. The texture of the herb is firm and hard, difficult to break. The herb has no odor, it tastes slightly puckery. The herb of better grade is hypertrophic, the texture is solid and firm, no hollowness, the surface is slightly covered by golden fluffy.

 Raw slice: the herb is an irregular strip or round longitudinal slice, 5~20 cm long, 2~8 cm wide, and 1.5~5 mm thick; the surroundings are irregular, the surface is dark brown, and occasionally covered by not removed golden fuzz; The fracture surface is light brown, and there is a raised brownish-yellow xylem ring or stripe 2~5 mm near the outer cortex. The texture of the herb is hard and easily broken.

 Prepared slice: the whole herb is black-brown, and the xylem ring lines are obvious.

 The herb slice of better grade is uniform in thickness, firm and hairless, and not hollow.

 Pharmacological actions: ①.hemostasis effect on traumatic bleeding; ②.increasing platelet count; ③.astringency; ④.antidiarrheic; ⑤.antibacterial action, etc.

 Medicinal efficacy: Expelling wind-damp, tonifying liver and kidney, strengthen waist and knees, strengthen waist and feet, easing joint movement. TCM Books: ①.Internally:6~12 grams; ②.Internally:water decoction, 1.5~3 qian (about 4.5~9 grams); prepare an ointment, or prepare to pill. Externally:wash with water decoction; ③.Internally:water decoction, 10~15 grams; or infusing in wine. Externally:proper amount, fresh herb mashed and apply stick.
 Contraindications,Precautions and Adverse Reactions:The herb Rhizoma Cibotii should not be used with Patrinia scaniosaefolia.
