Botanical description: Ganoderma formosanum Chang et Chen., is a fungus of the Ganodermataceae or Polyporaceae family and Ganoderma genus, it is commonly known as Ganoderma formosanum, Black Reishi LingZhi. The basidiocarp (fruiting body) has a mesic stalk, lateral stalk, excentric stalk, rarely sessile, suberinite to ligneous. The pileus (cap) is 15 cm in diameter, 0.3–2 cm thick, orbicular (subrotund), round or reniform, the surface has sparse concentric ring grooves, many annules or slightly vertical wrinkles, and is flat or concave in the center; the surface is claret red-brown, pale dark brown (pale black brown), dark grayish purple, black, has lacquer-like luster. The edges are sharp and blunt, sometimes recurved, regular to undulate; the thickness of the context is 1–3 cm, the upper part is white and thin, the lower part near the fungus tube is pale black or black; the fungus tube is 0.3–1.7 cm long. The prosthecae is up to 30 cm long, 0.8–2.5 cm in diameter, and verruculose.
The husk structure is sporiferous layer type, hazel (pale brown), the compositive hyphae are cylindrical to clavate, 5.1–6.3 μm in diameter, and lengths are 35.6–48 μm. The upper context is composed of transparent binding hyphae perpendicular to the husk of the sporiferous layer, and the lower context is composed of skeletal hyphae and binding hyphae. The tube orifice is circular, 131–151(–181) μm in diameter. The wall of fungus tube is 60–122(–202) μm thick.
The basidiospores are oval (egg-shaped) to torulose (subsphaeroidal), the tip has transparent papillae, not collapse or rarely collapse to truncated at maturity, brown, 11.5–12 (–12.5) × 7–7.6 (–8.5) μm.
Ecological Environment: Ganoderma formosanum Chang et Chen grows in mountains and forests. Geographical distribution: This species is mainly distributed in Guizhou Province, Taoyuan County, and Shangming County in northern Taiwan of China. Worldwide, it is distributed in China.
